Former Harris County judge pleads guilty to embezzling campaign funds; is sentenced

Alexandra Smoots-Thomas, a former Harris County civil judge, a 44-year-old pleaded guilty to using campaign funds to pay personal expenses, capping off a turbulent year that included chemotherapy, remission, a failed bid to reclaim her former bench and criminal charges last month alleging she fired a shotgun at her husband’s girlfriend. The government dropped six remaining counts of wire fraud.

Her plea agreement details how she siphoned off campaign money to purchase a Zales engagement ring and two Prada handbags, and to make two mortgage payments and cover private school tuition for her two sons. As a convicted felon, she will no longer be permitted to practice law, the only career she’s ever known, according to her lawyer in the assault case.Federal Judge Lynn Hughes sentenced her to time served - 37 days - and ordered restitution of about $28,000. 

The aggravated assault case arose out of her going to her husband's girlfriend's house and discharging a shotgun. That case was dropped (presumably in another court).

State Bar Directors Drop Attempt to Depose President Larry McDougal, TCDLA Looks Like Fools, Lose a Thousand Members

 

Texas Lawyer reports that the State Bar of Texas’ board of directors will no longer consider restricting the bar president from serving as a spokesman over critical comments he made about Black Lives Matter, after the director behind the proposal withdrew the measure Thursday. 

Some of the 'woke' directors wanted to fire Larry McDougal. His sin - he tweeted that Black Lives Matter are a bunch of thugs. I wonder what the leftists at the Bar would have to say about the two deputies who were ambushed by a 'person of color' in Compton CA this week? Some BLM types then tried to block the entrance to the hospital, and incredibly tried to get into the hospital to harass two officers fighting for their lives. BLM supporters were dancing in the streets with joy that two 'pigs' got shot and might die. 

A majority of the directors of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Assoc (TCDLA) authorized its president to write a letter joining the lynch mob howling to have McDougal fired. The president, Grant Schreiner, said he didn't need to poll the membership because like Obama, he had a pen and could do what he wanted. 

Well, guess what ? I've been informed by credible sources that TCDLA haI ws lost a third of its membership a thousand of the 3,000 members either got out at once (like I did) or didn't renew their memberships that came due August 31. 

I was vocal about my opinions that McDougal was right, that BLM are a bunch of thugs. I was reprimanded for being a racist. Well, f'--- the TCDLA and I hope they lose another thousand members. I don't know how any lawyer whose not a Marxist or anarchist can stay in such a radical  group. I wonder if they've posted anything on their website about what happened in Compton.
