Three innocent bystanders — including a 4-year-old girl who was toy shopping with her family — were shot Saturday in Times Square when a man arguing with three other people wildly fired into the late afternoon crowd, according to police and sources.

The bullets flew at 4:55 p.m. outside of 1515 Broadway, along West 44th Street, when the dispute turned the Crossroads of the World into a shooting gallery and shocked even hardened members of New York’s Finest.

The House of Fragile Things

This is one of the most disturbing and depressing pictures I've ever seen. It's from a new book:

THE HOUSE OF FRAGILE THINGS

By James McAuley
Yale, 301 pages, $30

The picture is in World War II in Marseille and shows Jews getting out of trucks or paddy wagons and being herded onto railroad cars that will take them to concentration camps. The book that shows how many of the French were enthusiatic participants with the Nazis. Some of the victims were from affluent families that had lived in France for generations. They collected art and rare books, and some gifted their beautiful homes to the French government. It wasn't enough - the Nazis and their anti-Semite French collaborators stole everything else they had, including their lives.

France and Germany were two of the most advanced, cultured societies in the world. If you think it can't happen in the USA, think again.
